The VCCJA Training Committee has several responsibilities. One of its primary responsibilities is to maintain Basic Skills training for CCCA and PSA staff. In addition, the Training Committee provides statewide regional training and other relevant training opportunities.
Offered by DCJS, Basic Skills training is held quarterly and is mandatory for all newly hired Directors, and Probation and Pretrial Officers. In 2006, the Training Committee recommended extending the training curriculum to seven days over a two-week period, thus enhancing the quality of the training, as well as, adding an optional course in VCIN certification.
Typically held in May, regional training consists of a single training topic offered to all four VCCJA regions. The Training Committee is responsible for selecting topics, registering participants, securing speakers and collecting evaluations for these trainings.
The Training Committee has established several goals for 2007. These goals are as follows:
- Enhance the quality of training offered by the Training Committee.
- Review and evaluate the reformatted Basic Skills and actively address issues that arise during the year.
- Provide Regional and Administrative Professional Training.
- Partner with the EBP Committee to provide training as needed.
- Evaluate and expand training opportunities statewide.
- Review and reevaluate the Training Committee budget each quarter.
To accomplish these goals we have established four subcommittees:
- Mentoring Program for Directors Subcommittee
- Administrative Professional Training Subcommittee
- Basic Skills Subcommittee
- Command Spanish Subcommittee
The Mentoring Program for Directors Subcommittee focuses on identifying potential mentors, preparing instruction manuals and developing onsite training agendas.
The Administrative Professional Training Subcommittee addresses issues specific to administrative staff, which are often the first point of agency contact. The subcommittee is responsible for implementing appropriate training for administrative staff.
The Basic Skills Subcommittee is responsible for implementing the reformatted Basic Skills training, as well as, auditing the curriculum and making changes as necessary.
The Command Spanish Subcommittee is newly formed and responsible for identifying the need for language training and matching that need with training sites. Other duties include coordinating registration with the Cultural Awareness Committee.
The Chair of the VCCJA Training Committee for 2007 is Imrie Worley. The committee meets at least quarterly, generally in Farmville, Virginia. Anyone interested in joining the committee should contact:
