Cultural Awareness Committee

Mission Statement

To improve communication  and address existing barriers between offenders/defendants, community  corrections agencies, and the local courts by developing services to assist  agencies. This will be facilitated through training opportunities, resources,  and inter-agency communication.

Goals and Objectives
2007

Goal 1: Educate Community Corrections and Pretrial Service Agencies to better understand  cultural differences in the population we serve.

Objective 1:     Partner with DCJS and the VCCJA Training Committee to provide continuing  staff training and education at statewide and regional levels.

Objective 2:      Partner with DCJS and the Training Committee to implement a Cultural Awareness  curriculum into Basic Skills Training, to include Estamos Aqui.

Goal 2: Continue to develop networks that will improve resources available to assist   agencies with multi-cultural needs.

Objective 1:     Update the Resource Guide based on feedback from the field. 

Objective 2:     Actively pursue representation from all agencies from all regions in  Cultural Awareness Committee membership.
